“I Love It” Icona Pop
Nothing deep about it, I just love that it makes me feel fierce and ready to go after it.
“Stronger” Kayne West
My pump up song is Stronger by Kayne West. Back in 2007 it was the song my high school cross country listened on repeat! We were state runner ups that year and it always reminds me of how close our team was and how hard we worked.
“Fight Song” Rachel Platten
While this may be cheesy I choose this song because I listened to it on repeat in the days before I PR'd this year in the mile. That's huge considering I am in no way a miler so I'm hoping it will have the same magic for me in the marathon!
"Burn This City" Cartel
"At least we know that if we die, we lived with passion." I’ve loved this song since 2007!
“Rites of Passage” Third Eye Blind
Reminds me of the journey that got me here - I got this album during the Twin Cities build up right after making some huge life changes and the lines "And you're all freaked out/Trying to find out what your life's about/In your soul there's a broken bone" speak to me. Plus, the whole song is an ode to Bowie.
My number one pump up song, which might not be much of a "pump up" song for most, is called Jubel by Klingande. I love it because its got a great, upbeat vibe and it just makes me want to get up and move :)
“Til I Collapse” Eminem
"When you feel weak, you feel like you wanna just give up - but you gotta search within you, and gotta find that inner strength"
I used this a lot rehabbing on the treadmill!
"Lose Yourself" Eminem
This song has always been an incredible motivator for me. Don't give up. Believe in yourself. Keep trying. Take risks.I will sing it to myself when the going gets tough.
“Confident” Demi Lavato
Without self confidence you have nothing...Believe in yourself! Easier said then done sometimes.
“Coming Around Again” Simon Webbe
An oldie but a goodie. Kind of a gospel to putting all the yucky stuff behind you and opening up to life and moving forward. It's also very literal about melting ice, winter sorrows... which is pretty obvious right now. Hopefully you east coasters are thawing out!
“American Oxygen” Rihanna
"Breathe out, breathe in
Every breath I breathe
Chasin' this American Dream"
“Elastic Heart” Sia
"You did not break me
I'm still fighting ...
I've got thick skin and an elastic heart "
“Lose Yourself” Eminem
"Look, if you had, one shot, or one opportunity
To seize everything you ever wanted. In one moment
Would you capture it, or just let it slip?"
"So here I go it's my shot.
Feet, fail me not"
"Not Afraid" Eminem
Because running is one big mental game, it's key to have confidence in the training, as well as the self, and this Eminem song embodies the need to not be afraid to take risks and trust the process.
“Shake It Off” Taylor Swift
This is my daughter’s favorite song, so not only does it make me smile, but it reminds me to forget the haters and do my own thing!
“Sabotage” Beastie Boys
When I hear this song, I just turn on the speed and bad assness, pushing through any pain or doubt, finding a whole different level of beast.
"Bang my Head" Sia/David Guetta
Definitely a current training block song for me. Love the lyrics about rising against and not giving up, and, bonus, it's got a great beat to run to!
“Wake Me up” Avcii
It reminds me how personal running is to me. And thinking that running is a dream. Good beat too!!
“Heroes (We Could Be)” Alesso.
I heard this playing when I was running the Chicago Marathon, and it gave me courage to woman up when the fatigue set in. This line got me:
"Everyday people do everyday things, but I can't be one of them. I know you hear me now, we are a different kind, we can do anything."
We are a different kind!
“Drag me Down” One Direction
I like the beat; and it makes me feel like I can't be stopped.
Had to pick three. Shal did it!
“Wolf Like Me” TV on the Radio
Race day jam. When you morph into the competitor inside.
“My mind has changed my body's frame but God I like it / My hearts aflame, my body's strained but God I like it”
“Rainbow Connection” Kermit
My ultimate life mantra. And the first song I ever put on a tape, recording it off the TV speaker. The lovers and the dreamers are the best.
“Make Them Gold” CHVRCHES
This is my LA song.
“We made of our longest days, we will take the best parts of ourselves and make them gold.” Reminds me that you can only be you, and only take your best parts and try to make them gold. That’s enough.
