The Paces and Faces of the Nest

The Paces and Faces of the Nest

No matter your path to running or if you’ve yet to come around, just remember it’s here when you’re ready...or not. But if you do decide to give it a go, never forget that *your* pace is the best pace. Don’t believe me? Check out what our O employees had to say about their relationship to running. Happy reading.

The Only Boy

The Only Boy

“What’s it like being the only boy?”

In the first year or two of the nearly six I spent here at Oiselle, I would respond to that question with precious earnest. Now, I have to mentally trudge to the Well of Social Duty, cursing the insipid question while searching for a response. The question shares emotions with when did you realize you were gay? If I need to stall to think of something new and clever to say, I coyly thank the asker for using the word boy. I’m thirty-five and delight in not being called a man, as if it’s always a compliment to my ever-fading youth.

“It’s great. I like women better.” That’s how I answer now.

Let me tell you a laughable attempt of me trying to be a better man thing, a better representative of the male sub-species. In an enlightening conversation with my sweariest friend (a woman, of course), I conceded I used the word “bitch” too much, and that meant I shouldn’t use it at all. My dilemma was that I used it like I did with my gay friends, calling each other bitches and fags playfully, because only with each other were those words powerless. My infinitely wise decision was to call everyone a dick, regardless of gender. After maybe a month of disappointing reception to this delightful appellation I was so proud of, I realized that women are so regularly assaulted with every nuance of insults, my “dick” had no effect. So if after the first few of these paragraphs you thought I had achieved perfect feminism here, I can tell you there’s no such thing. It’s a direction, not a state of being, and I just try to keep running the right way.

“But what’s it like? How did you get picked?”

I was in burnout. My job at the time was draining me of time and all the good emotions. I’d been on a years-long hiking stretch, but I got to the point I’d do a ten-miler and wouldn’t remember or enjoy any of it because I was imagining dramatic work scenarios the whole time. I switched to running, my old high school sport I’d only done lightly in adulthood because I didn’t want to accidentally run off all the muscle I was making zero effort at building.

My previous boss, Robert, had started nudging me about coming to work for him at one of the companies where he did CFO consulting. Here’s how an accountant sells a job: “You were a runner, right? Well this woman started making running shorts in her garage—not poofy ones, they fit well—and the company has grown to the point where they just need someone who can do all the accounting stuff.” I asked Robert why he was trying to get me to leave my job working for a publicly traded company to go work for someone’s Etsy business, but eventually agreed to interview.

If pretty much any other straight man had told me he was working with a group of women runners, I would have rolled my eyes and dismissed him as someone indulging in a fantasy he should replace with therapy and/or a better moral fiber. I have one story about Robert I never tire of telling. When we worked together the first time, rivaling executives hired this deplorable shell of a human to eventually displace Robert. This guy—let’s call him Mort—was slimy as a cartoon villain. Within a day of meeting the team he’d purportedly supervise, he was loudly insulting his wife and kids and I was polishing my résumé. Poor Robert had to go to lunch with him and listen to Mort moan about his wife who would never be better than a supermarket greeter. I wasn’t there to see it, but I can so vividly picture Robert as he shrugged and said he paid for his wife to go to law school and now she made more money than him. Yeah, Robert's feminist skills were a little sharper than my “dick” jabs. Mort was shortly fired or thrown out with the garbage, I can’t remember.

I’d have to tell a dozen more Robert anecdotes to substantiate my appraisal as non-asshole straight dude, as one of the good ones. So when he told me Sally was brilliant, creative, and strong—okay, I waited to hear him say it twice or thrice—I eventually believed him and agreed to meet her.

I live for the stories people tell of their first meeting with Sally, especially the many (majority?) of her being spectacularly ordinary, gleefully recounting her weekend long run where she literally shit her pants and still had miles left. But I never had that story. I got the one you all wanted. I wasn’t familiar with Oiselle styles yet, but she wore a sleeveless top and capris that would easily be featured in top athleisure/biz casual look books. Maybe it was the go-anywhere outfit, or maybe it was the go-anywhere attitude Sally has, but I appreciated her impressive figure. She walked me from Oiselle’s then tiny Green Lake office to a sunny outdoor courtyard. I remember noticing how Sally carries herself. It’s so real. She has no swish or swagger, no bullshit I’m-a-woman-CEO-who-walks-like-a-man bravado. Hers is the walk of a strong runner: efficient, practiced, and dangerous.

Robert must have tipped off this leader of an all-woman company that my homo ass wasn’t a masculine threat, but Sally knew better and definitely noticed how I sized her up. As we sat in the courtyard and she skillfully tested my experience and enticed me with the story and passion of her company, she’d arranged—I fucking swear she must have—a never-ending parade of shirtless runner dudes to attempt distraction behind her. What a clever test she’d staged and still denies. My respect and employment was hers.

“But what was it like?”

I’m the wrong person to ask because it was so easy for me. I grew up with women, as did all of humanity, but when you feel like part of the Other crowd—the same crowd women are somehow a part of despite their statistical majority in the species—you might feel a certain bond. My coworkers were like sisters who let me help build and play in a secret treehouse. We might not have posted NO BOYS ALLOWED, but it’s clear to the world we live in a feminine stronghold. In Margaret Atwood’s Handmaid’s Tale, LGBTQ people are labeled “gender traitors.” I imagine our treehouse vandalized with that title spray-painted on the walls. We’d probably shrug it off and turn it into a rally cry. Like, fuck those guys labeling us, blocking or stripping us of rights, underpaying, unrepresenting, and raping us, then shielding themselves with Brett Kavanaughs. We make our own rules and rule ourselves. It’s a pretty cool treehouse we live in.

When Ruth Bader Ginsburg was asked how many women should be on the Supreme Court, she famously answered, “Nine.” I think of that when people ask if I’ll be replaced with another boy, or if more man things will join the Nest. There’s no need for male presence here. If the right dude comes along, sure, but I really believe in the power of sisterhood. I remember in my early twenties when I first started going to gay bars. God, it felt so good inside those safe spaces. I didn’t have to excuse my behavior or hold anything back. Women need those spaces too--they just fucking need space everywhere. They need the Nest, the Bird Camps, the Wilder and Podium retreats, the Muse conferences. If we ever get a world where one man in a crowd of women doesn’t seem remarkable, that would be a very good world.

So, my obviously rampant feminism aside, I got to be fully me for six years at Oiselle. I’m so lucky to have such a long stretch of my life where I had that freedom. It’s more than what I had in high school when I didn’t feel safe to be me, or in college when I tried too hard to be me, or in my early career when there was “work me” and “diminishing me.” I will thrive because of my time here, because of how comfortable I learned to be for so long. I don’t have Sally’s formidable gait, but I found my own stride, the way everyone here does.

I’ll keep my head up, my wings out, and I’ll always be proud to be part of the flock.

Just Wear the Damn Shorts

Just Wear the Damn Shorts

Shorts. In my experience women fall into two categories when it comes to shorts. They either love them or hate them. The same goes for bathing suits, crops or finding that perfect pair of jeans. There just isn’t a lot of middle ground for these articles of clothing. You either love them or avoid them at all cost. Like even in the sweltering height of summer. The women will continually reach for capris or tights even in 90+ degree weather. Why? Why do we do this?

Be bold this summer and rock something outside of your comfort zone.

Sadly as women, myself included we are conditioned to dislike something about ourselves. For me it’s my stomach or mid-section. So crops, crops have never been my thing. Until now. Now I simply don’t care. Why should I have to subject myself to wait for the perfect body to wear X and X article of clothing? The perfect body. What is that anyway? How did that idea even come into my head and why have I allowed it to flourish? Despite my exterior confidence and swagger, those effing body shaming demons also live inside me and I hate them. They rob me of so much joy. They rob me of time and creativity.

So I guess what I want to say to you all is, if you experience any hot, humid or unsavory temperatures this summer, for the love of all that’s good in the world, just put on a pair of shorts. Long shorts, booty shorts, loose shorts, tight shorts, whatever you feel most comfortable in, but really do it. And believe it or not I’m writing this post in a freaking crop. Because I have great shoulders and fantastic breast so who cares if my belly is soft. No one. No one cares but me and as of late. I don’t care! In fact, I got tons of compliments from my friends and co-workers. So be bold this summer and rock something outside your comfort zone.

Roga Swim: The Story Behind the Style

Roga Swim: The Story Behind the Style

Style

They say the heart of innovation is cross-pollination; combining the unexpected, borrowing from one area and applying it somewhere entirely new. In fact, one of our greatest moves in product design, was using a fabric we originally spotted in a board short, in the swim + surf world, into a pair of running shorts. And so the Roga was born.

RogaSwim_blog-image1.jpg

Over the years, we also saw a lot of our teammates, friends and customers, wearing their Rogas, Mac Rogas, and the whole Roga family as swimsuits. Why pack a suit AND running clothes, when you can swim in your shorts? It works in a pinch, and clearly the fabric was up for it. This fabric was destined to return to swim and summer and salt water - and so that's exactly what we did. Introducing the Limited Edition Roga Swim Collection.

RogaSwim_blog-image2.jpg

It starts with this amazing fabric. A stretch woven that also has a very high percentage of spandex. So even though it has all the body we love in a woven knit, it still moves and stretches with you... sitting, walking, swimming, running, gently moving closer to the chips and guac. Yep, all the options.

  • 4-way Roga Stretch Woven
  • Chlorine + abrasion resistant
  • Color-fast, resisting UV fade
  • Rich, bright colors + prints
  • Premium quality and long lasting

RogaSwim_blog-image3.jpg

The style makes the suit. And these two pieces are both vintage and modern.

The Roga Bikini Top - is a pullover style that provides for your just-right fit with an easy halter tie at the back neck. From small to larger cup sizes, the design is both supportive and versatile. Better yet, rock the top with high waisted tights or jeans and a wide brim hat. Just add sunscreen.

The Roga Bikini Bottom - is high waisted, providing great coverage. The leg opening curves up, but also doesn’t creep and crawl. The wide banding at the waist and leg is both a design detail we love (accentuated when it's reversed), plus it helps the suit stay put.

RogaSwim_blog-image4.jpg

Two times the fun when it’s reversible! With the exception of the Saturday, which stands alone, the other colors are reversible to either a print (Black Diamond, Poppy Diamond) or another solid. Finally, meet two new colors to the family: Cinder (a soft, smoky blue) and Pine (a deep, PNW-loving green).

Thank you for your interest in Roga Swim! A special note is that these styles are part of our Fabric Forward Program that reduces fabric waste at the factory. As such, all sales are final and we are not able to offer returns and exchanges for these two pieces. For questions on fit, follow along with the first #AskBrenda Insta story on @oiselle, or per usual, don’t hesitate to reach out to hello @. Head up, wings out — and happy almost-summer!

Introducing #AskBrenda, Because Everyone Needs a #Flystylist

Introducing #AskBrenda, Because Everyone Needs a #Flystylist

Style

You know my friend, Brenda.

I'm sure you do. You've met her at our Flagship Store, joined her for one of our Thursday Night Runs, been to Big Birdcamp, seen her on trail runs in the PNW, or at the Kara Goucher Podium Retreats (that's where we met in 2014!)

askbrenda_1.png

A one-woman force of nature, Brenda brings the women together like no other. Quick-witted, refreshingly opinionated, and prone to celebrations with world class baked goods, she invites the world in, and sets the tone: no matter your pace or background, you belong here.

Brenda is also a #flystyle savant. One of her many strengths is that she can deftly, quickly, and often remotely, help our community with what-works and what-doesn’t-work guidance. She’s so good at it, that she has informally become a go-to for many customers, to assess everything from color to fit to fabric.

Overheard at Oiselle Store: Brenda to a customer, “No, that’s not the right color for you, I don’t think so…” as she pulls her own recommendations from the floor. 15 minutes later, style solutions all over the place. I mean, I’ll be honest, I wish I had Brenda every morning… wouldn’t a daily stylist be nice?

All this leads to an exciting announcement: Brenda is officially becoming Oiselle's first official #Flystylist, and soon you’ll be able to #AskBrenda your own questions via Oiselle social feeds, including Instagram and Twitter.

DB8EF598-4DA2-4B79-9D92-27A3CCBC6057.JPG

You can expect #AskBrenda to focus on new releases, #flystyle pairings, specific fit guidance, and of course — answering all the questions from near and far. Behind the scenes, know that these shenans will be brought to you by the two-woman duo of Brenda and Jess Barnard, who are already prepping for the first session.

When will this all begin? Nothing says show business like getting on the stage - stat! So without further ado, THIS WEEK please look for the first episode of #AskBrenda with the release of a very special kind of style that you may have thought we weren’t going to make this year… I can say no more! Other than: thank you Brenda, Jess, and all the women in our community, for continuing to tell us your hopes and dreams and opinions about what works for you, on the run — and everywhere you fly.

Straight Scoopers Dish on Spring Styles

Straight Scoopers Dish on Spring Styles

oiselle running rebecca nelson
Style

Buckle up for a Straight Scoop round up!

We’ve gathered up a big batch of Straight Scoop reviews of current styles from a bunch of our intrepid reviewers. Read on, and maybe you’ll find a new favorite.

PASSPORT TUNIC

Nicole-Passport-Tunic.jpg

Nicole: Midweek Straight Scoop flystyle!!! And it’s another non running piece!! I guess you can run in it if you want. But I’d rather pair it with cute shoes and skinny jeans for work. I love this. The cut is so flattering, especially the shoulders? I love the funnel neck. AND THE POCKETS. I need a place to hide my sweaty AF hands. Thanks Oiselle.

APRIL SHOWERS ANORAK

Ellen-April-Showers-Anorak.jpg

Ellen: Make me one with nature...ish. Just not too cold. Or too damp. Or too windburned. For those April showers (or February, October, March...) the lightest possible waterproof jacket that plays well with layers (I have 2 underneath this here!) And the print... magnificent.

FLYTE BRA AND BRIEFS

Kolbe-Flyte-Undies-1.png

Kolbe: Flyte bra and undies are smooth as butter and oh so comfy. Will be perfect to wear all summer long. And of course, I got pink.

Diana:  My cousin Julie asked me recently if the company I Straight Scoop for had underwear. Oiselle does—and I had a Flyte bra and underwear waiting to try. I wore them around the house and they were perfectly comfortable. But J said “I’m looking for something that stays put during yoga!” Well, if they stay put during running, they should stay put during yoga. So I tried the underwear for a 6-mile speed workout and a 20-mile long run and never thought about them at all. And that’s how underwear should be: So totally functional and comfortable that you never give them a thought. I have the Stone, but the Fast Pink and Black can expect to be in the rotation soon.

Courtney: I have run in the bra numerous times (size large) and also done a couple [solidcore] classes while wearing it. Honestly I prefer wearing it under a tee shirt just on the go because it’s so comfy. That said, it can work for easy running (really easy - it’s not super compressive). The briefs are also height of comfort. I think these pieces are great for light workouts or (my favorite) just everyday wear.

BUM WRAP

Crescent-Bum-Wrap.jpg

Crescent: Okay y’all I’m giving you the Straight Scoop on the Oiselle Bum Wrap and I wasn’t even asked for it...at least not on this item. Long story short I ABSOLUTELY LOVE it. I had the Roga Skirt previously, and though it was aesthetically pleasing the shorts rode up while I ran. The Bum Wrap instead settled into place and stayed. I’ll definitely be buying more of these. For reference I’m 5’11” with a 35.5” inseam. I’m a solid medium and the 8 fit awesome.

Lindsey: Had the chance to test drive the Oiselle Bum Wrap for the Straight Scoop reviews. The fit is true to size, shorts underneath stayed put, and I love that it is a little higher waisted than the shorts. The skirt also has a beautiful cut and the back is just a touch longer than the front. Honestly I didn’t think about them at all on the run.

Michaela: I’m not normally a skirt gal, but the Oiselle Bum Wrap is super lightweight — no fidgeting or thinking about your clothes, all thoughts focused on breath and the sound of feet hitting pavement.

FLYOUT WOOL TANK

Nicole-Flyout-Wool-Tank.jpg

Nicole: flyout tank, wool edition. Long torso’d womxn rejoice! *Pros: the flyout/wool blend is so interesting— simultaneously really light but also cozy? Great for layering. *future wishes: I wish the neckline was higher and this came in solid black or a solid color in general.

ARRIVAL JACKET

Ali-Arrival-Jacket.jpg

Ali: Arrival Jacket in Cosmos: this jacket has a zipper pockets, high collar, and thumbholes—everything I want for an early spring run when it’s still a bit chilly. I LOVE this color.

SUMMER LUX SHORT SLEEVE

Lauren-Summer-Lux-SS.jpg

Lauren: Because who doesn’t perform post run pushups in a parking garage
I am usually not a short sleeve lover when I run, but the way this ultra-light fabric moved with my body and the super soft satiny feel was (heart eyes, heart eyes)
PS: Summer Lux SS, you are the peanut to my butter

Marie: Just a little drinking bird pose in the comfiest t-shirt I currently own. The Summer Lux short sleeve has become my new go to for every activity. It’s so soft, dries quickly and has two loops sewn inside and out for those days you need to do the awkward public bathroom change. (disclaimer: I do not know that this was the intended use for these loops, seems legit though).

ROGA SHORT

Jaime-Roga-Shorts.jpg

Jaime: For the Straight Scoop, these Rogas are perfect for everything, especially with the rear zipper pocket. The fabric is roomy and waistband does not fail. I'll be running a storm this spring. I usually prefer the macs but I love this print so much.

STRIPED MILE ONE PULLOVER

Bekah-Striped-Mile-One-Pullover.jpg

Bekah: I literally spent 36 hours in this thing when I got it: I wore it around my house & to yoga, slept in it, wore it to run two days in a row, then put it on again after showering  It’s super soft and I love the stripes, and the sleeves are long enough that you can keep your hands warm if you forgot gloves like me! Perfect layer for some sunny strides along the Charles River.

STRAPPY BRA

Michaela-Strappy-Bra.jpg

Michaela: Did a bike-run brick tonight in my Oiselle Strappy Bra. I love the color (it screams fast), cut (the straps are so fun), and coverage (no excessive cleavage on view here). Breathability is also, a plus since I get so sweaty on the trainer. I wanted a bit more support for my run, but on the bike this was great.

PASSPORT TANK

Sharon-Passport-Tank.jpg

Sharon: I needed to get ready for the Oiselle Tenacious Ten, so inside run on the track. Had on my nice, airy Passport Tank-for me, one size up for broader shoulders. No rubbing anywhere, nice drape, neckline will make this a great multi-purpose top; work, travel, workout! Love it!

SUMMER LUX RACERBACK

Kolbe-Summer-Lux-Racerback.jpg

Kolbe: Summer Lux is soft yet strong. Tough enough to hang on through any workout and delicate enough for treating yourself to a night out. Fits true to size. Will have you feeling like a DANGEROUS WOMAN.

Little Wing Camp #FlagUpWingsOut

Little Wing Camp #FlagUpWingsOut

jess barnard oiselle
Team

What happens when you skip town for a breath of thin air in the desert?

What happens when you commit to this next season of training and racing and everything in between?

Little Wing decided to find out, so we flew off to Flagstaff for altitude training camp in March and April. The city of Flagstaff hovers right around 7,000ft of elevation (about twice as high as Bend, OR) and has become somewhat of a mecca for groups training at altitude. It has great options for running on trails and soft surfaces, the iconic Lake Mary Road is right there, and you can drop down into Sedona pretty easily to hit some faster paced workouts when needed. Our days were filled with checking out new trails and coffee shops, putting time in at the gym, testing the latest Oiselle gear on both the roads and on the track (and brunch, obviously), fangirling all the other local or visiting elite runners, recovering with Jasyoga and afternoon naps, eating our way through Sprouts grocery store (we love Sprouts!), and getting caught up on Game of Thrones.

Our time in Flagstaff went fast, and we all successfully came home with some fresh new fitness and next level appreciation for how incredible this all-women elite group truly is.

What happens in Flagstaff hopefully doesn’t stay in Flagstaff - our time spent training at altitude should ideally carry us through the next few months as we continue to run, race, recover, and rumble through this season. See you out there.
