Do you have a quote that guides, inspires, or embodies your training/racing/life?
“What ever you do, do it passionately." and "If one could run without getting tired, I don't think one would often want to do anything else." - C.S. Lewis
Why do you run?
I often ponder this question. There are so many reasons, and not all are tangible or easy to describe. There's the obvious benefit of keeping myself healthy and in shape. I participate in a lot of recreational sports, but running has always been the most accessible. You can run pretty much anywhere! Running also keeps me in shape for all those other pursuits. But most importantly to me is the mental aspect of running. I decided to start running ultra distances because I liked the way that those long runs challenged my mind much more than my body. When things start to hurt, it becomes a game of mind over matter. There's a great deal of personal strength and mental toughness that comes from running that I haven't found so fully in many other sports. Running is my release from all the stresses and hassles of the world. Running is the closest I'll ever come to flying. Between every stride, for a split second, we are released from the ground and gliding through air. It's a freeing feeling.
What is your favorite place to run?
The powerline trail along the front range. It's a short drive from my home that plops you right at the base of the mountains and as you run you can see the ocean on one side and the mountains on the other! It is pretty cool.
Running gear you can't live without?
My bright pink compression calf sleeves, sunglasses, and my collection of minimalist running shoes.
What is your favorite local running store?
The Skinny Raven; it is the only running store we have, but it is fantastic!
When you're not running where would we find you?
Outside somewhere; hiking, climbing, camping, kayaking, you name it. Or at a local coffee shop reading a good book!
What is your favorite post-race treat?
A banana with almond butter and after a long race, a beer!
Complete the sentence: If I was stranded in a hotel room with one movie and one book, they would be…
