Do you have a quote that guides, inspires, or embodies your training/jumping/life?
"You are confined only by the walls you build yourself." -- Andrew Murphy. I love this quote because it reminds me not to limit myself. Most of the difficulty we have in meets is whether or not we believe that we can make a bar or not, and too often we cripple ourselves with self-doubt.
What is your favorite post-competition meal?
After a good meet, my go-to is a nice, big burger (probably with an egg on it).
What is your must-have piece of training gear?
I chalk my hands before I jump, so love a great chalk bag. Right now, I have one featuring a pink t-rex with arm-extending claws. Is says "I am unstoppable," and it cracks me up every time I use it.
Do you have a training philosophy?
When I train, I focus on being present in every moment. Even on the worst practice days, I focus on being deliberate and capitalizing on every rep. Being able to work through the hard days allows me to trust myself during the meets and to enjoy the great days.
Where is your favorite place to compete?
My all-time favorite place to jump has to be the Armory! I competed there quite a bit in high school, and gong back always feels like home. The venue is phenomenal, the same officials have been running the pits for as long as I can remember, and the crowd is always dialed into the competition. I always look forward to jumping there.
Why do you pole vault?
I vault because it makes me happy. You'll never find me in a better mood than when I have a pole in my hand and spikes on my feet. I love the challenge, and then when you put it together in a meet, the euphoria you feel as you fall back down after clearing a lifetime best is indescribable.
What is your favorite activity, when not training?
When I'm not training, I love to read and to bake. I don't get to bake too much, but when I do, my go-to is a caramel filled brownie that my mom and I made pretty often when I was growing up.
Complete the sentence: If I was stranded in a hotel room with one movie and one book, they would be…
I would have to pick Ann Patchett's State of Wonder and The Pursuit of Happyness.
