What is your favorite quote that guides, inspires, or embodies your training/racing/life?
During a rough workout sometimes I have to remind myself, as Les Brown puts it, "YOU HAVE GREATNESS WITHIN YOU!" That usually gives me the edge I need.
During pain, I tell myself, "Keep pushing; at the end of pain is success." -Eric Thomas
And for the days that I don't even want to lace up my running shoes, I remind myself that, "To give less than your best is to sacrifice the gift." - Pre
Favorite post-race meal?
I usually crave a huge juicy burger after racing! It needs to have almost every topping available, and hopefully some fries and a shake will accompany that burger.
What is your must-have piece of running gear?
I always need a split watch and long tights during training. During the winter I absolutely have to have some type of ear covering - that could be a beanie or a thick head band, and gloves.
Do you have a training philosophy?
Since my college track career at UCR, I've stuck with the phrase "Train don't strain" - That is simply learning to listen and understand one's body; taking recovery days just as seriously as Threshold, MVO2, and Long Runs. And I'm still working on this: as runners we have to learn that our minds can take our bodies to levels that we could never imagine possible; so I train to make my "impossible" possible, because guess what...IT IS POSSIBLE! Every workout I keep my goals in the forefront of my mind, and during the workout I tell myself that it is possible.
What are your favorite places to train?
Any chance when I am away, I love finding trails to run on a recovery or long run.
Why do you run?
Running has always provided a sense of freedom and peace to my mind. The more mature I became in running, I realized that the faster I ran the more liberated I felt--liberated from all of my worries, free from barriers or opposition telling me I can't. I run because it proves me to myself; it empowers me. And somehow, that inspires other to find what empowers them and makes them happy.
What is your favorite activity, when not running?
When not training I love spending time with my 1 year old son. He's got quite the personality! Other than spending time with him, when time permits I enjoy singing and playing my guitar. I like to think of myself as an acoustic soul artist. When possible, I'll attend open mic nights or I'll perform at different events.
